A bluesky post by John Rogers with a link to a bbc article titled "Hunt continues for thieves after priceless jewels stolen in heist at Louvre museum in Paris - live updates". There's an image of a guard in front of the glass pyramid outside the Louvre. John Roger's post reads, "So this is apparently a very low tech theft, but a good reminder that's how most of the world works. An amusing story from PDX... 1/".ALT
A continuation of John Rogers' thread. 2/ We were in a Portland art museum scouting for LIBRARIANS so all the LEVERAGE work was behind us, and we were talking about a very famous piece of art being loaned to the museum, and out of habit I asked "How did you transport it?". 3/ "UPS." I nearly hit the stop button in the elevator we were in. "That painting is worth $100 million." The curator shrugged. "Sometimes we use private couriers, but they might not have the requisite insurance. So UPS.". 4/ All the alarm system designs. All the research. I had a subscription to the industry catalog of cutting edge physical alarm and restraint systems. All the careful construction of intricate fail safes, hours of our lives both creating and then defeating them ...ALT
A continuation of the thread. 5/ And every alarm system we used in the show was based on real tech, we were just on the cutting edge, that's why you saw it show up in MISSION IMPOSSIBLE movies five years later. And in the end, "UPS". 6/Which is a good reminder of a) best time to hit the score is in transit and b) there are no Moriarty's because there really don't have to be. Except amongst money launderers. XXALT

john rogers on the louvre heist. for context on the “low tech” thing, they used this to access the napoleonic jewels:

An image of the furniture lift that was extended to the balcony of a gallery at the Louvre, used by the thieves. It is essentially a ladder connected to a vehicle.ALT

…and then really just normal power tools for the glass. and they didn’t try to stop the alarms going off etc. low tech but evidently effective.

as an archivist I am begging you

  • put dates on everything
  • don’t believe digital stuff is preserved forever - if it’s really important (documents, photos, etc) print it out
  • name your files accurately I know it sucks but please
  • don’t destroy the original just bc you scanned it
  • rubber cement is the devil’s adhesive use photo corners and quit gluing shit
  • you will NOT remember write it down
  • if you staple things to the inside of a folder I will find you
  • your public library probably has equipment to digitize old media for free or can at least get you connected with somewhere that does!
